On this date in 1732, Augustine and Mary Washington welcomed a child into the world. They named him George. Little did they know at the time that their first-born son would become one of the most famous and influential Americans of all time!
In 1775, when Patriot soldiers from the original thirteen colonies readied to engage in a revolution for independence against the British Empire and its monarch, King George III, Washington was appointed Commander-in-Chief. For six years and against all odds, Washington bravely persisted, never losing sight of the words emboldened by the Declaration of Independence: the unalienable right to Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. Finally, in the fall of 1781, Washington led his troops to what would be a decisive victory over the British in the Siege of Yorktown. This would be the last major battle of the American Revolution: .
Washington would then go on to serve as President of the 1787 Constitutional Convention which drafted the current Constitution of the United States of America. In 1788, he was unanimously elected by the Electoral College to serve as the first President of the United States, a position he held for two four-year terms.
For all the profound effects he had on securing the blessing of liberty for all Americans, George Washington would become affectionately known as the “Father of Our Country.” His image is forever memorialized as the foremost President in the Mount Rushmore National Memorial in Keystone, South Dakota:
Even today, two-hundred ninety-three years after his birth, George Washington is ever-present in our daily lives through the many symbols created over the years to honor him and his service to America. Don’t believe it? Just open your wallet or pull some change out of your pocket and there he is!
.
Thank you Mr. Washington. We honor you today and as an expression of our gratitude we wish you a very Happy Birthday!
