December is Universal Human Rights Month

In celebration of the adoption of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) on December 10, 1948, the entire month of December is observed by countries around the world as “Universal Human Rights Month.”

After World War II, with the human rights atrocities of Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Germany fresh in everyone’s mind, world leaders and the newly formed United Nations were compelled to establish universal standards to protect all people from such unimaginable human rights abuses in the future.

To achieve this goal and to prevent events such as the Holocaust from ever happening again The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was created and adopted by the UN General Assembly.

Comprised of thirty basic human rights to which every man, woman and child in the world is entitled, the Declaration is of vital importance for the full realization of unalienable rights for all peoples of Earth.

Both the opening line of the Preamble and Article 1 show the purpose and spirit in which it was written:

"Preamble: Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world …”

"Article 1: We  are all born free and equal..."

What You Can Do To Protect Human Rights

The Declaration itself clearly states what the most important action is to take in order to make these 30 human rights a reality for everyone:

“a common understanding of these rights and freedoms is of the greatest importance for the full realization of this pledge.”
