Happy Birthday Mr. Washington

On this date in 1732, Augustine and Mary Washington welcomed their first child into the world. They would name the baby boy, George. Little did they know that their son George would become one of the most famous Americans of all time!

In 1775, as Patriot troops from the original thirteen American colonies readied to engage in a revolution for independence against the British Empire,  Washington was appointed Commander-in-Chief.

For six years and against all odds, Washington bravely persisted, never losing sight of the words emboldened by the Declaration of Independence:  the unalienable right to Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

Finally, in the fall of 1781, Washington led his troops to what would be a decisive victory over the British and the last major battle of the American Revolution: the Siege of Yorktown.

Washington would go on to serve as President of the 1787 Constitutional Convention which drafted the current Constitution of the United States of America. In 1788, he was elected unanimously by the Electoral College to serve as the first President of the United States, position he held for two four-year terms.

For all that he contributed to the founding of America as a free and independent country, George Washington will always be known as the Father of the Country.

Today, 293 years later, we wish him a very Happy Birthday
